PROJECTMAIN STREET BEAUTIFICATION PROJECT
Ongoing... The 2016 Main Street Sidewalk Project, funded through a federal grant administered by NYS DOT, added wonderful ADA access throughout the street, fixed many of the deteriorated areas of sidewalk on Main and revamped Furnace street. The project required removal of 5 trees, but it added 9 new trees to Main Street, planted on Arbor Day April 28 2017. These improvements are so great, but of course the grant funds couldn't possibly cover all that needs to be done! With the forward-thinking goal of saving taxpayer money and improving the health of Main Street trees and the longevity of the new sidewalks, several areas of the sidewalk "utility zone" in which tree pits reside were left with a crushed stone finish in anticipation of root-friendly beautification efforts after the Sidewalk project was completed. That's where we come in! Through a partnership between village government, community-minded businesses and volunteer residents funds are being raised in on ongoing manner to add a pleasant park-like atmosphere to parts of the street. The improvements are designed to facilitate pedestrian traffic and car doors while helping protect the trees and encourage root growth along the utility zone instead of under the main sidewalk. The Main Street Beautification Project will happen in phases as funding goals are reached for each area. PHASE 1 -- SPRING thru FALL 2017 Includes planting two new pink-flowering Kwanzan Cherry trees, installation of decorative painted-steel tree pit guards, permeable grass pavers and garden plantings in a 50 ft run adjacent to 93 thru 91 Main St and Cold Spring Village Hall. We installed Phase 1 trees last fall and will add tree guards and landscaping this Spring 2017. FUTURE PHASES -- In total, the larger Main Street Beautification Project includes approximately 6 beautification zones of various longer lengths as well as a hand full of smaller areas. There are also numerous existing trees along Main Street that will be retro-fitted with decorative tree guards on a rolling basis as funds are donated under a special Village-wide Sponsor-a-Tree program. YOU CAN HELP FINISH THIS PROJECT! SPONSOR A TREE GUARD (DEDICATION PLAQUES AVAILABLE) OR MAKE A GENERAL DONATION TO FUND THIS PROJECT.
