PROJECTTREE PIT GUARDS ON MAIN STREET
2019 Dozens on new tree pit guards were installed around trees along Main Street in the business district, adding a lovely feel to the street. But tree guards aren't just pretty fences! Their main use is to protect some of our most vulnerable village trees in our high-traffic area from damage wrought by soil compaction and dog urine by encouraging foot traffic to remain on the main sidewalk area and out of tree root zones. They also create protected zones where business owners and residents can contribute to tree health and beautification of our shared walkways by "adopting" a tree pit and trying their hand at keeping it weed-free and perhaps even gardening there! The Tree Advisory Board held a workshop in May 2019 to teach interested residents about the challenges of tree pit gardening. An informational handout, including a list of suggested plantings, can be downloaded here. The tree guards installed were of two types: traditional painted steel, fabricated and installed by local business R & G Wrought Iron Railing; and a newer recycled material--High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) plastic fabricated and installed by City Tree Guards. The installation of these guards are part of a larger project currently underway to improve the health and longevity of village trees. Tree guards are funded by a grant from the Urban and Community Forestry Program of The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) and continue to be added to village trees through additional private donations. If you'd like to donate toward a tree pit guard on public property near your business or residence please contact the village clerk (845) 265-3611 or email the Tree Advisory Board at [email protected]. The best time to plant a tree is twenty years ago. The second best time is now. |
