PROJECT
BOSCOBEL & COLD SPRING PARTNER TO PLANT DOZENS OF TREES IN THE VILLAGE
November 18, 2022 Fifteen trees were planted in the Village of Cold Spring this week, with several more planned for a spring planting, thanks to a partnership between the Village and Boscobel House and Gardens that grew out of their "Boscobel Tree Initiative"--a 3-year, pilot program to help share Boscobel's mission with it's wider community. The trees fill very conspicuous holes in the village's canopy along the highly visible public way of Chestnut Street/9D and Morris Ave/(9D where majestic American Chestnut trees and American Elms lined the street until blight events caused devastating near-extinction of the trees in the United States. The new trees selected add a variety of species to the streetscape, including Nyssa sylvatica, Metasequoia, Taxodium distichum, and Ginkgo biloba, in an effort to avoid a single-species mass-dieback event that would wipe out the street in future generations. The trees were planted adjacent to the sidewalks but on the properties of several community-minded businesses who graciously accepted the tree donations and worked with Boscobel and the Tree Advisory Board to select and plant appropriate shade trees for their sites. The participating businesses were The Nest Childcare Center, M&T Bank Cold Spring and Haldane Central School District, with Unicorn Contracting and The Manitou School participating by pledging to plant their own trees as part of the Initiative. Participating landscape firms included Garrison Tree, Grace Kennedy Garden Design, and Kingsley Tree Care. Boscobel states: "The trees are intended to help restore beauty and historic character of Cold Spring and benefit its ecosystem long-term, just as trees do at Boscobel. In its first year, the Tree Initiative was made possible by a generous anonymous donor to Boscobel’s Tree Fund. It is hoped that this project will inspire and be a model for other communities, organizations, and individuals to create their own environmental initiatives."
