UPDATE: PERMEABLE PAVERS BEING INSTALLED ON MAIN STREET August 2019 The Village of Cold Spring Highway Department is busy installing permeable pavers in select sidewalk areas adjacent to village trees. This work will improve rooting space and conditions for adjacent street trees and help extend their life. UPDATE: TREE PIT GUARDS INSTALLED May 2019 Dozens of new tree pit guards were added to select Main St trees to protect trees in high-traffic areas from damage wrought by soil compaction and dog urine and to provide point-of-pride garden areas for businesses or other residents to adopt. The Tree Advisory Board held a workshop in May 2019 to teach interested residents about the challenges of tree pit gardening. An informational handout, including a list of suggested plantings, can be downloaded here. The tree guards installed were of two types: traditional painted steel, fabricated and installed by local business R & G Wrought Iron Railing; and a newer recycled material--High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) plastic fabricated and installed by City Tree Guards. The installation of these guards are part of a larger project currently underway to improve the health and longevity of village trees. Tree guards are funded by a grant from the Urban and Community Forestry Program of The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) and continue to be added to village trees through additional private donations. NYS DEC GRANT AWARDED Jan 2019 We are thrilled to announce that the village has won a Tree Maintenance grant in the amount of $49,162.10 from the Urban and Community Forestry Program of The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC). The successful grant application was written and prepared by the members of the Tree Advisory Board with the support of the mayor and Board of Trustees. The village was one of 54 communities statewide to receive a portion of $2.24 million in state funding for urban forestry projects that protect and enhance air and water quality and natural resources in New York State. The grant will fund The Cold Spring Priority Street Tree Maintenance Project, a project designed to address some of the most pressing problems that the relatively new board has encountered while attempting to institute the village’s Tree Management Plan. A significant portion of the grant will go toward mitigating potential hazards by removing a daunting backlog of highest-priority tree pruning requirements throughout the village. The project will enhance the health of several aging trees through maintenance pruning as well as help protect and ensure the longevity of several younger trees through the widening of some tree pits, the addition of protective tree-pit guards and installation of water-permeable brick pavers around a handful of struggling trees in the most highly-traversed areas of the Main Street Business District. These improvements are designed to help reduce future maintenance costs by encouraging healthier growth throughout the tree life-cycle and thus reducing the need to remove dead limbs or failing trees. In addition, the installation on street trees of Inventory ID tags, will allow easier tracking and referencing of specific trees during inventory audits and during communication between staff, tree professionals, volunteers and members of the public. A final portion of the grant will support public information sessions about the village’s urban forest in partnership with the all-volunteer citizens group the Cold Spring Shady Lane Campaign. To ensure the most efficient use of funds, work on different portions of the project will be completed through the combined efforts of tree professionals, village staff, Tree Advisory Board members, Cold Spring Area Chamber of Commerce members and citizen volunteers. If you would to be notified of volunteer opportunities on this project please contact Tree Advisory Board chairperson Jennifer Zwarich at [email protected].
